Lord of the Rings- Lauter Brunnen

Have you ever heard of the word Wunderkammer? Or the term Cabinet of Curiosity? Or as they are called in Turkish, Curiosity Cabinets? For the first time in the mid-1500s, the noble families of the period; They made collections of unicorn horns, mermaid skeletons, stuffed creatures, dried plants, sky domes and many other unfamiliar objects in the fields of nature, art and science, and then exhibited them in special rooms or cabinets.

Curiosity Cabinet

The purpose of rare cabinets, also known as rare objects, is to nourish knowledge and aesthetic curiosity by bringing together various and rare objects in the world. In fact, these cabinets are considered the pioneers of today's modern museums and scientific research. Think about it, the foundations of museums are based right here. I would love to have a cabinet like this, I can't get enough of talking about it anymore, when we have guests at our house, I would introduce all the objects one by one :) Considering that I cannot do this, but my mind is full of memories and curiosity like a cabinet of rarities, today I will tell you about a trip to Switzerland, where I recently collected various objects for my cabinet of curiosities. I would like to tell you about some of the nature museums.

Open-air Museum

As you know, Switzerland is a true open-air museum. It is the most livable country in the world with its fascinating nature and magnificent views. In my previous articles, I wrote that the only thing missing was the sea, and I asked whether this could be possible with lakes. But people love to talk and make judgments about things they have not experienced. As I read in a book; A person interprets his relationship with the world through his own needs and distorts what is necessary and unnecessary, what is elegant and clever, what is stupid and what is beautiful. However, of course the world does not revolve around any of us. Maybe we should accept that we are sometimes prejudiced and often prejudiced...

From my previous experiences, I would never have thought that swimming in a lake could feel so refreshing and as good as the sea. Until he swam in the lake at Brienz. Maybe because of your mood, maybe because of the people next to you, or maybe because of your desire to live, leaving yourself in the turquoise waters, or maybe feeling the temperature differences in the places warmed by the sun in your entire body, offered a completely different experience. Therefore, if you go to the village of Brienz in the Swiss Alps on a summer day, my first warning is to immerse yourself in the cool waters.

Apart from swimming, you can also enjoy walking, boat tours or water sports by the lake in this village, which is famous for its wood carvings. If you want to get more information about this village and are really curious about the color of the lake, you can access it from this link.

Let's come to Lauter Brunnen, which is considered one of the most famous villages in Switzerland. J.R.R Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings series, was inspired by this village when designing magical places in Middle Earth. Tolkien, who visited the Lauter Brunnen valley during a trip to Switzerland in 1911, was very impressed by the impressive nature of the region and reflected this experience in his works.

Lauter Brunnen

There are 72 waterfalls in total in the village and even its name means many springs. Of course, one of them is the most famous, you can go into the hollow and walk behind the waterfall. We couldn't do it because there were too many queues and the weather was 95 degrees hot :) If you really want to do justice to nature, I strongly recommend that you make your travel plan according to the weather, and even if you are going to be here in the summer months, you set out early to avoid the heat and crowds :)

You can also ride a bike in the village or have a picnic by buying milk, cheese and bread from the vending machine. You can reach Mannlichen Mountain at 2200 meters from this village, which you can reach by train, by cable car. The cable car here is a bit old school and has a balcony. If you're curious, it's here. It is worth trying to enjoy the cable car outdoors. But if you are not sure which mountain to climb, like us, one of the options is to reach different destinations from the main terminal by reaching Grindelwald village.

Grindelwald- map

As you can see on the map above, you are guaranteed to see beautiful places in this center, which is covered with cable car lines, by making a choice in the time-quality-price triangle. If you go up to Mannlichen from Grindelwald, which is our choice, you see the killer wall on your left, which is important in the famous mountaineering world. The German term for the north face is Nordwand, or "north wall," and climbers who entered the tomb by attempting to climb it nicknamed it Mordwand, or "killer wall." Indeed, climbing caused frequent deaths until the 1960s. Fortunately, deaths have decreased with developing technology. Before I forget, another option from Grindelwald station is to go to Grindelwald-First Cliff. Here, you can sky-walk on steel profiles at approximately 2200 meters. But we exercised our right in favor of Mannlichen and did not regret seeing the happy Alpine cows.

As you take the cable car, you witness unique natural views as well as killer walls. Especially seeing all this greenery and the mountain in panoramic view takes your breath away. If you want, you can go up to this point by cable car, eat cheese fondue and sip your drinks, and after refreshing, you can walk down and witness the unique views. But of course, the weather, equipment and your mood are very important, like every outdoor sport.

After filling our happiness tanks in this region, we continued our trip first with Bern and then with Zurich. It is one of the must-see cities in Bern. Especially the narrow streets, arched shopping streets and the famous clock tower, which are on the Unesco World Heritage List, are worth seeing... Writing about them is left for another summer for me :) I hope this was an article that you found inspiration in, visually refreshed and enjoyed while sipping your coffee. See you in new adventures :)

Cheers,

Betty.
